Martial arts can help anyone gain confidence in body and mind, and you’re never too old to start. Healthy Kansas City adults start here, at one of our three local United Studios of Self Defense (USSD) studios. USSD has programs for every skill level and martial arts desire, and we are here to help you reach your personal goals.
USSD Kansas City has many different classes to choose from, on days and at times most convenient for you. All of our classes are divided into age groups, so adults have their own times with all the benefits of an individualized fitness program. They also get to experience the stress relief, camaraderie and cooperation of a team sport. However, if you prefer a private class, just let us know. We can also tailor a training program just for you, based on your needs and/or skill level.
Our local USSD studios currently offer the following classes for healthy Kansas City adults:
Shaolin Kempo Karate is an ancient mix of martial arts. You will learn the powerful strikes of karate, the body manipulation of Jiu Jitsu, the internal strength of Tai Chi, the flowing art of Kung-fu and the kicks and footwork of Taekwondo, Tang Su Do and multiple arts of South Asia. All have been seamlessly woven into the art of Shaolin Kempo.
Cardio Kickboxing is offered at our Prairie Village Dojo exclusively. Cardio kickboxing is a high-energy group fitness class that combines martial arts techniques like punches, kicks and knee strikes with fast-paced cardio. This high-energy workout challenges the beginner and elite athlete alike. Tone muscles, build stamina, improve coordination and flexibility, relieve stress and burn calories as you build lean muscle with this fun workout.
Tai Chai is one of the most effective exercises for mind and body health. Often called “meditation in motion,” Tai Chi is different from most other forms of movement and exercise because it’s a way to work directly with one’s qi, or life force. This low-impact, slow-motion exercise is accessible to anyone, regardless of age or fitness level. You can get started even if you’re not in top shape or health. The injury rate is low while the health and fitness benefits are high and, in fact, there is growing evidence that Tai Chi helps treat or prevent many health problems. The benefits include improved muscle strength, flexibility, balance and aerobic conditioning.
Jiu Jitsu is a Japanese martial art and a method of close combat for defeating an armed or armored opponent either with or without a short weapon. It incorporates strikes, throws, trips and ground fighting into a more general hand-to-hand combat approach. We teach both standing and ground fighting techniques, as well as self-defense and competition skills in both GI and no GI classes.
Our Women’s Self-Defense class will help you gain the confidence and peace of mind that comes from knowing you can take care of yourself when you’re alone. With this training, you’ll get a great workout and unlimited variations on training routines to focus on the areas you need to develop. The self-defense aspect is a natural byproduct of the training skills you’ll learn.
